Marine Sciences Program for Middle School Students

Summer Camp at Sandy Hook is a hands-on marine sciences program with both lab and field work that explores the marine life and habitats of Sandy Hook's beaches and estuaries.  Click here for our brochure and here for our YouTube video.  Or click here to go directly to the on-line application.

Summer Camp at Sandy Hook is supported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and takes place in the James J. Howard Marine Sciences Laboratory on Sandy Hook – a real live working government marine sciences laboratory.  All the instructors are from the Marine Academy of Science and Technology (MAST) that is right next door to the James J. Howard Marine Sciences Lab.  Sandy Hook has announced that they’ll be open May 1, 2013.  So we’re all set!

The topics covered include:

  • Marine Life:  We will collect, identify and dissect marine plants and animals.
  • Marine Habitats:  We will explore inter-tidal beaches, salt marshes, estuaries, the holly forest, as well as the bay and the ocean.
  • Physical Oceanography:  We will analyze the waves, tides and currents along with their impact on the beach.
  • Water Chemistry:  We will investigate techniques for sampling water temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen content.
  • Marine Careers:  We will present various marine occupational areas as well as their educational requirements.
  • Lab and Field:  Each day will include both lab work and field work on Sandy Hook.
  • Certificate:  A Certificate of Completion will be awarded upon successful completion of the program.

Dates and Times

We will offer four identical sessions:

  • Session I:  July 8-12.  It looks like the first week is full.  But things change and we still have openings in the fourth week so please fill out the application.
  • Session II:  July 15-19.  It looks like the second week is full.  But things change and we still have openings in the fourth week so please fill out the application.
