The Summer Camp at Sandy Hook faculty is all part of the Science Faculty at the Marine Academy of Science and Technology (MAST).
Mr. John Valente is a teacher at the Marine Academy of Science and Technology (MAST). He teaches physics with an emphasis on physical oceanography and AP physics. He is also the Vice-President of the New Jersey American Association of Physics Teachers. As such, Mr. Valente conducts numerous workshops for physics teachers with the goal of improving physics teaching. He also currently services as Co-Chair of the Physics Olympics Committee. The Physics Olympics brings students from around the state to compete in various Science challenges. Mr. Valente earned an M.A. in Physical Science Education from The College of New Jersey.
Mrs. Jessica Godkin has been a science teacher at the Marine Academy of Science and Technology since 1999. She has a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from Rutgers University. Prior to teaching, Mrs. Godkin worked as a Technical Sweetener Specialist for Hoechst Celanese Nutrinova division. She has a patent from her research with sweeteners, “Sweet-stable acidified beverages”.
Ms. Clare Ng is the Marine Biology and Environmental Science teacher at MAST. She is also an adjunct professor at Brookdale Community College. Ms. Ng holds a B.A. from Barnard College of Columbia University and a M.S. in Marine Ecology from Rutgers University. Ms. Ng is the current President of the New Jersey Marine Education Association and is very excited to meet all the students this summer!
Ms. Liza Baskin graduated from Rutgers University with a BS in Marine Science and is currently finishing up her masters in Biology at Georgian Court University. Besides teaching Marine Chemistry at MAST, she works as a marine science researcher studying invasive coastal species. In 2010, she spent the summer working aboard the NOAA research vessel Henry Bigelow studying changes in the water chemistry at the wellhead of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. When not pursuing science she spends time with her children and her border collies, playing Frisbee, camping and generally being outdoors as much as possible.
