Code Secrets:  Girls, Science and Coding 0010

We enjoyed a fun-filled, fast-paced experience in July during our “for girls only” coding course that involved multiple aspects of computer science. We’ll definitely replicate the fun-filled aspects, but using new technology and introducing some new platforms and languages.

During the first half of the course, new students will get "up to speed" using Hour of Code activities and veterans will experiment with the Arduino Digital Sandbox. By the second half of the course all students will be working together on MIT Scratch, HTML/CSS and MIT App Inventor projects. All students will be challenged with opportunities to creatively apply programming concepts.

Mr. Michael T. Roche and Mr. Christopher Hanas of High Technology High School will teach this course. Classes will meet on Monday evenings from 6 to 8 PM beginning October 5. (Sorry guys ~ not for you ~ we’ve had too much fun with our “girls only” coding courses.)
 

Mr. Michael T. Roche

Mr. Roche is a research advisor and biology teacher at High Technology High School, located on the campus of Brookdale Community College in Lincroft, NJ.  He was recently honored with a Siemens Founders Award and fellowship that allowed him to work with a materials science research team at Oak Ridge National Laboratory.  Mr. Roche earned a B.S. in Environmental Science from Rutgers University and an M.A. in Environmental Studies from Montclair University.  He has served as a Director for the National Consortium for Specialized Secondary Schools of Mathematics, Science and Technology (NCSSSMST) and is the recipient of numerous grants and awards for excellence in science teaching.  In his spare time, Mr. Roche enjoys juggling, reading and creating rhythmic sounds with a variety of musical instruments.


Mr. Christopher Hanas

High Technology High School

Mr. Hanas is a teacher of engineering and computer science at High Technology High School.  As an undergraduate, Mr. Hanas earned a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Lafayette College.  During this time he was honored with the Mechanical Engineering Faulty Award, and memberships to the National Engineering Honors Society and the Mechanical Engineering Honors Society.  He continued his education while working in the telecommunications industry by earning a M.S. in Telecommunications from Southern Methodist University.  During this period he was also awarded three patents.  Mr. Hanas taught mathematics for nine years prior to moving to High Technology High School.  He recently spent two of his summers participating in the Rutgers University Research Experience for Teachers in Engineering.  During this experience he worked with the Chemical Engineering Department and in the Coastal Ocean Observatory Lab (COOL room) at the Institute of Marine Coastal Sciences.   In his spare time, Mr. Hanas enjoys running, mountain biking, fishing, surfing, playing guitar and reading.
