Marine Science Summer Camp at Sandy Hook
Marine Science Program at MAST

Cancelled.  The Monmouth County School District has cancelled all summer camps at MAST and High Technology High School so we won't be able to offer this camp during the summer of 2021.

Bummer!  But the safety of our students and faculty is paramount.

Summer Camp at Sandy Hook is a hands-on marine sciences program with both lab and field work that explores the marine life and habitats of Sandy Hook's beaches and estuaries. It is hosted by the Marine Academy of Science and Technology (MAST) on Sandy Hook. Click here for our brochure or here for a short video.  MAST began hosting this program in 1991.  Wow!

Students will learn to identify the unique characteristics of each major marine phyla and the various marine habitats on Sandy Hook including the sand dunes, salt marshes, estuaries and the holly forest.  We will explore the main ideas of these topics in class discussions followed by laboratory activities including dissections of each of the major ocean invertebrate phyla. We will do field studies of Sandy Hook's three main ecosystems including the major plants and animals of each ecosystem.  Students will also investigate ocean water chemistry by measuring temperature, dissolved oxygen and the pH.  Our final activity will be the dissection of a sand shark.

Each day will include both lab work and field work on Sandy Hook.  A Certificate of Completion will be awarded upon successful completion of the program.

If you have questions, please contact Mr. Valente on 908-433-8096.

What's Different?
Our camp is a real science program with part of the day outside on the beach seining and exploring the fauna and part inside doing dissections and using microscopes.  Our teachers are experienced high school science teachers (not summer hires).  This is the way real marine scientists work.

Dates and Times
We will offer three identical sessions:

  • Session I:  July 6-10.
  • Session II:  July 13-17.
  • Session III:  July 20-24.

Classes will meet from 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM at MAST on Sandy Hook. Students must provide their own transportation to and from the Marine Academy of Science and Technology (MAST). Students should bring their own snacks and lunch.

The faculty for the summer camp are all members of the Science Faculty at MAST.

Tuition for the five day course is $300.

The program is open to students who will have completed the 6th, 7th or 8th grade by June, 2020. The students must have earned a B or better in the current year's science course.

Enrollment is limited. Applications will be handled on a "first come, first served" basis.  Acceptances will be emailed on a "rolling acceptance" basis.

Application Deadline
The application deadline is June 26, 2020.

If your plans change and you can't make it to Summer Camp at Sandy Hook, we'll provide a refund if we know before May 26. We'll provide a refund up until June 12 if we're able to find a replacement to fill your slot.
