Marine Science Summer Camp at Sandy Hook
Marine Science Program at MAST
Cancelled. The Monmouth County School District has cancelled all summer camps at MAST and High Technology High School so we won't be able to offer this camp this summer.
Bummer! But the safety of our students and faculty is paramount.
Summer Camp at Sandy Hook is a hands-on marine sciences program with both lab and field work that explores the marine life and habitats of Sandy Hook's beaches and estuaries. It is hosted by the Marine Academy of Science and Technology (MAST) on Sandy Hook. Click here for our brochure or here for a short video. MAST began hosting this program in 1991. Wow!
Students will learn to identify the unique characteristics of each major marine phyla and the various marine habitats on Sandy Hook including the sand dunes, salt marshes, estuaries and the holly forest. We will explore the main ideas of these topics in class discussions followed by laboratory activities including dissections of each of the major ocean invertebrate phyla. We will do field studies of Sandy Hook's three main ecosystems including the major plants and animals of each ecosystem. Students will also investigate ocean water chemistry by measuring temperature, dissolved oxygen and the pH. Our final activity will be the dissection of a sand shark.
Our camp is a real science program with part of the day outside on the beach seining and exploring the fauna and part inside doing dissections and using microscopes. Our teachers are experienced high school science teachers (not summer hires). This is the way real marine scientists work.
